Correcting Unchecked Power

The above image, God and Moses at Night is also available as a Desktop Background

Today's song is A World Without Love by Peter and Gordon, released in 1964.

The Time Magazine article, When State Police Fingers Terrorists should be disturbing to every American. Just because an American is exercising the right to peacefully protest against government policies, that does not make them a terrorist.

I may disagree politically with a protesting group, but I respect their right to peaceful protest. Our nation was founded by protesters during the Revolutionary War. Did you know about half the population of the colonies wanted to stay under British rule?

Peaceful protest by those opposing the Crown swayed those that supported the Crown. That took place on the civilian front and actually helped the revolutionaries win militarily over the British. So don't discount peaceful protestors, they are a vital part of our Democracy, even if you don't agree with them.

I agree with the following quote from that Time Magazine article:

"Abusing the system like Maryland has is not going to improve our national security -- it is only going to irritate Americans who will rebel against it. Terrorism lists should be compiled by the FBI, and reviewed by an Congressionally-mandated, independent body to purge the names that shouldn't be on it. The United States does not do well as a police state, but it does even worse when local and state authorities get to decide who the enemies of this state are."

We are about to elect a new President and many new members of Congress. Some of those elected we may agree with and some not. However we remain Americans all and we need to make sure our freedoms are protected from enemies foreign and domestic.

The article, Rejection Fosters Intuition seems right on target to me.
