Losing Connections

Today's song is Everything That Touches You by The Association, released in 1968.

This report, Get everyone in US online, high-level panel says points out the urgency this nation faces in ensuring rural communities have reasonable and economical broadband access to the Internet.

Below is an image of one of my weblog posts, "Island Carlsbad" from April 2000. It shows my quote from September 1998 and part of my thoughts about the need for broadband in the former city I lived in at that time.

In fact it took until early 2002 for me to get inexpensive two-way broadband access to my house. Other areas of San Diego already had it for years. Now even as the end of the first decade of the 21st century nears, many rural folks in the U.S. still can can't get it. This is a major issue for our economy and it isn't getting the attention this situation deserves.

A vast pool of Americans in those rural communities are not able to fully participate with the rest of us on the Internet. Websites that contain rich content (pictures, videos, etc.) can't be loaded in short time when using their only connection to the net, a telephone modem at extremely slow speeds.

For instance, my friend, Gary, recently sent a 6 MB file to his school over the modem. He reports it took him 30 minutes to transmit that file. It would take me less than 20 seconds to send that file. What would he do if he needs to download patches to his computer software that usually amount to hundreds of MB's?

Our nation should have a fast-acting program to enable all Americans equal and inexpensive access to broadband Internet communications within two years from now. Until then folks without that option are disenfranchised Americans.

Congrats to my friends, Angel and Linda, to their daughter and her husband for the child expected on February 2, 2010.
