Real Change Required

Today's song is The Way It Is by Bruce Hornsby, released in 1986.

It's time for the federal government to eliminate technology lock-ins. One industry in particular, cellular carriers, are restricting users with draconian rules and contracts. Let me set an example of how free competition should work from American history.

The Pony Express was a wonderful idea and was a sucessful business until the First Transcontinental Telegraph came into service. Imagine if Congress back then prevented the telegraph from being used in favor of the established Pony Express? It's a silly idea, I know.

But, Congress enables cellular companies to inflict draconian contracts on users and prevents new technologies from being used instead, such as, Voice Over IP (VoIP). To me it's tantamount to forcing me to use the Pony Express to communicate instead of the telegraph. It seems to me that by allowing this situation to exist, that Congress is not protecting the public, but instead shielding corporations from competitive changes in the marketplace.

Maybe using the iPhone, users will finally be able to free themselves from the unreasonable clutches of the cellular industry. The iCall application is a champion by bringing VoIP to a smartphone. When in a Wi-Fi zone, your costs for calls to anywhere in the world would be trivial compared to cellular rates. Why pay $70 a month or more to a cellular company when you could be paying close to zero?

If you think you can't always count on Wi-Fi being present and need to make a cellular call instead, take a look at this carrier's coverage map. Enter your zipcode and zoom in to see places you might need using their expensive coverage. I think you'll begin to more clearly see the picture I've painted.

We need Congress to eliminate lock-ins and allow new products and services to create competitive markets. The Pony Express is history. Let the lock-in corporations go the same way, either with Congress' help or by your own citizen action. In this season of change, let's make some real change now.
